Foods to Avoid with Orthodontic Work

With any orthodontic procedure, there are a number of precautions you should take when it comes to what you eat. Common sense can answer a lot of your questions about what foods to avoid, and what can break or damage braces and other orthodontic work. These include sticky foods and those that contain high amounts of sugar as well as bad habits like biting your nails and chewing on non-food items.

Examples of candy that needs to be avoided include:

  • Sugar-free and regular gum
  • Licorice
  • Toffee, caramel, and Tootsie Rolls
  • Starbursts, Now or Laters, and Airheads
  • Jolly Ranchers and other hard candy

Examples of hard foods to avoid include:

  • Ice
  • Crusty bread, bagels, and pizza crust
  • Nuts
  • Corn on the cob
  • Raw vegetables
  • Hard fruits like apples

Avoiding these common foods will help keep your braces intact and avoid the need for additional fix-it appointments.
